Richard Calhoun shares a Hazen story

I was on staff as Assistant Director of the LEA Program in 1970 and on Senior Staff as Director of the LEA Program from 1971-1972. Beside learning the ins and outs of counseling, our kids enjoyed beach trips, sporting events, and even an outing along the Connecticut River.

What was a Summer Job turned into my life long vocation as I became Director of Recreation and Parks in Plant City, FL. This included Cincinnati Reds Spring Training Facility for 10 years. Housing the International Softball Federation which had the United States’ one vote on the IOC for a number of years. Building multiple playgrounds, youth and adult sporting facilities, running summer programs, and starting the Optimist Youth Soccer Program for eastern Hillsborough County. I also officiated high school basketball and football for over 20 years in the greater Tampa area. Being honored as an inductee to the West Coast Officials Organization Hall of Fame felt great.

I owe much of this to my experience at Hazen and working with tremendous folks I met there. It will always have a warm place in my heart.
